The Conservation & Logistical Context:

Nam Kading NPA is a strictly protected conservation area, meaning no trees could be felled during construction. Furthermore, the site is only reachable by navigating the Nam Kading River, which involves passing through a series of five challenging rapids. Depending on the water level—often lowered by upstream dam operations—boats must be partially unloaded, manually maneuvered over rocks, or transferred between riverbanks. This extreme remoteness dictated every design decision: materials had to be lightweight, factory-prefabricated, and transportable in small boats, with minimal reliance on concrete, which is heavily extracted and environmentally costly in the region.

As part of my ongoing collaboration with the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) Laos, I consulted on the development of the Kenglouang Jungle Camp, a low-impact eco-tourism facility situated deep within the Nam Kading National Protected Area. The camp serves as a base for exploring one of Laos' most pristine and remote river systems, accessible only by boat from Keng Bit village.
